Mighty Mangroves is our go-to for mangrove trimming. We consistently reach out to Lori for an on-site consultation to assess permit requirements and determine the legal limits for our crew's trimming activities.

I've been working with Lori for nearly a decade at our bayou property. My quest was to find someone with an in-depth understanding of the precious mangroves encircling our home. Lori perfectly fit the bill. Her expertise, work ethic, and attention to detail are unmatched. Lori is always quick to respond and incredibly easy to collaborate with.

Mangrove Mama was absolutely fantastic! Without her expertise, we would have faced significant delays in starting our dock. Her knowledge was not only essential but also greatly appreciated. The job she performed was excellent, and we wholeheartedly plan to refer her in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mangroves are specialized trees adapted to tolerate saline environments. They are considered halophytes, in that they are salt-tolerant, but not salt-dependent. These trees can be found along our tidally influenced shorelines. Mangroves are protected by the 1996 Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act. They are regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. If you’re not sure if you have mangroves or not, feel free to contact us or schedule a consultation. We would love to assist you with your shoreline!
Mangroves consist of 3 different species found along various elevations on the shoreline. The red mangroves have a pointed leaf and the distinguishing feature of aerial roots and prop roots. The black mangroves are found in the mid tidal range and have a silvery back of their leaf. This is where the tree excretes the salt. The black mangrove is the only mangrove that takes the salt into their system. The white mangrove is the most landward species. It has a thicker leaf with a truncate and pink petioles at the base of the leaf. Mangrove ecosystems often have other trees mixed in such as green buttonwood, sea grape, Brazilian pepper and other invasive species.
Mangroves and their leaves that drop are the basis of the mangrove food chain. The mangroves drop their leaves for nutrient export. The mangrove mollusks and crabs eat the mangrove detritus and begin the food chain for the mangrove ecosystem. These trees act as natural guardians of our coastlines, protecting the land by reducing wave action, reducing erosion of the land, providing fish nursery habitat and improving water quality. Mangroves are capable of storing 10 times more carbon than other trees. Mangroves improve the quality of life for our residents, contribute to Florida eco-tourism for fishing and are always working to filter the water.
A PMT is a licensed qualified individual who has met the credential listed in the 1996 Mangrove Trimming & Preservation Act. ISA Certified Arborists, Professional Wetland Scientists, Landscape Architects, and other certifications are acceptable. We have 25 years of experience with mangroves and mangrove trimming, permitting, restoration planting and education.
Mangroves grow in the subtropical and tropical regions of the world in specific latitudes of warm climates. In Florida, there are 3 native species of mangroves: Red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle), Black mangroves (Avicennia germinans), and White mangroves (Laguncularia racemosa).
There is privacy to be maintained by leaving the mangroves in a natural condition. Exotics should be removed so that the mangroves can thrive and function in their ideal state. If you’d like to have a mangrove consultation and shoreline assessment, please request a consultation. We can offer advice and solutions to meet your needs for viewing, vessel access and dock access. We can obtain permits for trimming if needed.
